6 First-Period Stories You'll Most Likely Relate To

By: Allison Waldbeser

From soccer games to period stains, here are six first-period stories we thought you would get a chuckle from, because who doesn’t like to hear about other people's period stories?

How come this tampon won’t go in?

“It was the morning I had to go to a soccer tournament and I didn’t want to wear a pad,  so I had to try to figure out how you put in a tampon. My mom was standing outside the bathroom trying to explain it to me and I think I was yelling at her! I definitely didn’t put it in the right way until the third attempt...and I’m pretty sure we were late to soccer.” – Cammie

Celebrating your first period at good ol’ Starbucks

“I didn’t tell my mom for four days, I was in 7th grade and used panty liners (like four together to make a pad) because that’s all I could find and I was too scared to try a tampon, and when I finally told my mom she took me to Starbucks to celebrate.” – Aubrey

Poop or blood?

“I got my first period when I was around 11 or 12. I was out with my grandmother and when we got home I went to the bathroom, pulled down my pants, and was like “Um...whoms’t??” because there was a big brown stain in my underwear! I honestly thought I shit my pants and just didn’t realize it while we were out. So I took my underwear and went downstairs to show my grandmother. She FREAKED and called my dad telling him how I got my period and he needed to come home. I panicked and texted my mom. She said “Yeah probably your period. Don’t freak out. Text your dad to get you some pads, you’re fine.” And that’s the story of my first period!” – Isabelle

When you and your bestie are on the same cycle

“My parents were away and my uncle was babysitting me, my brother, and my cousins. I went to the toilet oblivious to what was happening. To my surprise I found blood in my pants and freaked out! I knew vaguely of periods but felt very unprepared. I messaged my girlfriends for reassurance, and I discovered that my best friend had also started that night! We couldn’t believe it and both went through the stress together.” – Leah

Bloody family vacation

“I started my first period at 14 years old. I was on holiday in Spain. We were by the pool, and I went for a wee, and then noticed in my swimsuit something weird and brown. I asked my mum about it and she said it was my period. So we sent my dad to the local shop about a 5 minute walk away to get me some pads. My sister is seven years older than me, so luckily my dad knew what he needed to buy. If it hadn’t started on holiday I don’t think it would’ve been so memorable.” – Abigail

Saved by the mud

“It was the 3rd of October of 2011, and I was at a festival with my family wearing WHITE shorts. I happened to sit on a dirty chair and got my white shorts stained by mud. This actually hid the first vestiges of my first period, which I noticed when I got home and went to the toilet.”  – Dory

Okay, so mine was pretty normal. I remember I was 10 years old when I got my first period (now Im 16) . It was a normal sunny day in June 2017 and it happened in school but I did not notice. I got home from a long day of school and went straight to the bathroom. I did my business and noticed a strain on my underwear but couldn’t really see what it was because of the dark color of it and of my underwear. When I wiped and I saw blood. I didn’t really think much of it although I knew I was eventually going to get it someday then and called my mother. She was actually happy about it and handed me a pad and gave me some a whole lecture of advice. It’s actually a really good feeling and memory when in entering womanhood, well at least for me.

Hi lioriana,

Spotting is quite common and often happens before the period starts. It may be a good idea to use pantyliners and have period products with you, once the period starts you can then switch to them.

I started exercising this week (running, biking, walking) and I was supposed to get my period today. Instead, I had cramps and bloating. Is that normal?

Help! October 12, 2021

I have been preparing to get my period for about 3 years. So I got my first period a few months back, in June. I went to a b-ball game and when we got home, I saw brown in my underpants. I was like “I must have an upset stumach” but a tiny little part of me thought it was my period. I had the same thing on my underwear in the morning. My mother and I went out to eat and right before we left, I put on a very thin tiny liner. All through the lunch, I felt wet and uncomfertable. She dropped me at home and then went to the store. I went to the bathroom and my undies looked like a bloody mess. I was calm and went and put on one of my few pads and threw the underwear away (they were long past dead). I called my mother and told her “I got my period” and she went nuts. “Oh my gosh! Do you need me to come home?” “No, but can you get me pads and chocolate (I had read it was good to eat on your period and I love chocolate).” “Of course. Are you sure you don’t need me to come home?” “No, I am fine.” “Okay, I will go as quick as possible and text me if you need anything else.” She told my father. Luckily for me, my two older brothers were both away at camp so it was just me, my parents, and three-year-old sis. The Saturday after (this was on a Thursday) I told my older friend and it felt so good. I am supposed to start it again tomorrow and today I was an emotional hormonal mess! I cried for no good reason and was tired and kinda grumpy.

Im telling your first periods start at the worst times. I was at a softball tournament/vacay that i was looking forward to all year and the second day, we were about to go to the pool and saw blood. I had to deal with it the whole week and ended up going in the pool with a pad on.

Hi Camila! It’s normal to experience discharge for a long time before your period starts. The brown “clots” could be spotting if the bleeding is very light, which is typical before your period starts. :)

I was going to go swimming with my cousins when the nine year old quietly told me to go inside. She said the same to my eleven year old cousin and they told me I was bleeding sown there. None of the parents were home except their dad (my uncle) so I called my aunt and she said just put some sort of paper towel or something in my underwear. I’m SO glad they told me before anyone else saw!

I got mine when I’d just turned eleven (I’m thirteen now). It was at school and I didn’t notice until I got home. Since I didn’t even know that a period was a thing, I told no one and just threw away my underwear because I was so embarrassed and thought I’d shit myself. I told my close friends about it and they explained what it was and everything. I’m still, to this day, so glad they understood and everything. :)

so I started my period on Dec. 9th, 2020. I was 13 almost 14 (I’m 14 now). It was early in the morning around 9:00 or 10:00. I felt some weird goo in my undies and had been having discharge for almost a year now so I thought nothing of it. When I had finally gone to use the bathroom I saw what I had been wanting to see forever!! All my friends have had theirs so I felt SO happy and excited it was finally here! And ever since my period has never been late and i’ve had a period every month. Also on my 4th period right now. ;p

I started my period on January 7th of 2017. I was 12, turning 13 in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately I started a day before we were leaving on a trip to Mexico. I had my period for most of the trip, but at least I was home when I started.

I experienced brown discharge June 2020 and onwards until Monday September 7th 2020 – the first day back at school from lockdown (in the uk) I felt it during pe and it was a double lesson. But when I got home from school I completely forgot about it until I went to the bathroom. I asked my online friend about it since it was brown and she said it was my period. I only have two brothers so I couldn’t tell anybody. And my mum was in the hospital sick. So I hid it for the rest of the week while it gradually got worse every day. I didn’t know where all the feminine products were though. However, I did not leak through though thank god because I sat on the edge of my chair throughout the week. When she got back home on Saturday I told her everything and it turns out she left me a load of packs near the cupboard behind my bed which at that point I felt pretty annoyed. It’s been 6-7 months now, I was 12 (turned 13 a month ago) and I feel kind of relieved that it’s happened.

This is a bit of a different story, but I got my first period when I was 17. I had been battling an eating disorder since I was 14 and was in and out of treatment for years. Eventually my doctors decided to give me hormones for about 10 days to see if they could induce a period. I wouldn’t say the medicine gave me mood swings, it just depressed my mood for about a week, and two days after stopping, I got my first period. It was very calm, very planned, and at 17, I felt mature enough to deal with it. I wish I didn’t have to go through years of therapy and treatment and I honestly think that starting my period younger would’ve been better than battling with mental illness, but I’m grateful for the now-healthy body I have every day.

It was in the early summer and I was running around my yard, then I went inside to go to the bathroom and there it was, about a quarter size patch of red brown blood. I knew what it was, but I still freaked out and I was super shaky. I went back outside and started pacing, while trying to figure out how to tell my mom. Eventually my mom came outside and I told her, she was super cool about it, and she showed me how to use the pads. It was really funny though, because my mom said that she kind of new it was coming. Isn’t it so weird how moms just know??

Nalia February 19, 2021

I started my period in October of 2020. About a month prior, I had noticed brown discharge for a few days before it stopped. Then, In October, I noticed the brown discharge again. I worried that maybe it WAS my period, becuse it was almost exactly a month sincerely the last time that bad happened. I looked it up, and then MY SISTER popped up from behind me and was like
“What the heck Are you looking at?”
I was so embarrassed And rAn to my room. After talking with my two sisters for a bit, I ended up sleeping in one of their rooms. The next morning I woke up and went downstairs into the bathroom only to realize that there was blood all over the liner I had put in last night because of the discharge. I was like “Mom?”
“What?”
“Can you come here?”
“One sec”

“I think I started my period.”
“Really!?”
“Yeah.”

And that’s what happened. The thing is, my. Period has been early/ regular every since and it’s never been late.

anonymous nerd December 02, 2020

It was May 3rd, 2020, I am 12 yrs. old. It was a couple of days before summer vacation(May 15th). I was walking to my History class, and we had to walk this long ass staircase, and I felt something like pee going onto my underwear, and I had discharge since I was 9, so I kinda was expecting it, just not that day. So after I got to class, like an hour in, I had to get up and answer the question on the board, and everyone started laughing and I just shrugged it off. Later, once I got home, I always go to the bathroom first thing, and as soon as I pulled my underwear down, I was blood, mine wasn’t brownish, mine was a reddish pink. First thing I did was call my sister, and since I have 4 older sisters, I kinda knew what the products are, bc I would always get them for them. But yeah, so I called my sister and she laughed so hard, and she was like “haha, you got your period!!” and I just bursted with tears of joy and fright, but yeah, it has been 6 month since I got my first! (btw, she did give me supplies and stuff)

Chibi December 02, 2020

It was just a normal day. I was going about with my chores and stuff until felt weird down there. I rushed to the bathroom and saw blood on my undies. I quickly rushed to my mom and she congratulated me, gave me some pads and taught me how to put it on

Felicitas November 23, 2020

You guys are so wierd about periods.

Ugh November 23, 2020

I got mine this year in august and it was very light and I told my mother and she gave me one of her maxi pads, My period skipped over september but i knew that was fine since you dont have a regular period for the first year. I got my period again yesterday . I had been cramping that day and when i was about to step in the shower i had to go so i used it and I notice there was blood and it was way heavier than before in august so i took the shower changed in to my clean clothes and put one of my pads on that my mom had bought me in september but I never used them because i didnt have one in september. I have sorta bad cramps. I cant take pills yet what should i take. Also im anout to turn 14 this month.
