6 First-Period Stories You'll Most Likely Relate To
By: Allison Waldbeser
From soccer games to period stains, here are six first-period stories we thought you would get a chuckle from, because who doesn’t like to hear about other people's period stories?
How come this tampon won’t go in?
“It was the morning I had to go to a soccer tournament and I didn’t want to wear a pad, so I had to try to figure out how you put in a tampon. My mom was standing outside the bathroom trying to explain it to me and I think I was yelling at her! I definitely didn’t put it in the right way until the third attempt...and I’m pretty sure we were late to soccer.” – Cammie
Celebrating your first period at good ol’ Starbucks
“I didn’t tell my mom for four days, I was in 7th grade and used panty liners (like four together to make a pad) because that’s all I could find and I was too scared to try a tampon, and when I finally told my mom she took me to Starbucks to celebrate.” – Aubrey
Poop or blood?
“I got my first period when I was around 11 or 12. I was out with my grandmother and when we got home I went to the bathroom, pulled down my pants, and was like “Um...whoms’t??” because there was a big brown stain in my underwear! I honestly thought I shit my pants and just didn’t realize it while we were out. So I took my underwear and went downstairs to show my grandmother. She FREAKED and called my dad telling him how I got my period and he needed to come home. I panicked and texted my mom. She said “Yeah probably your period. Don’t freak out. Text your dad to get you some pads, you’re fine.” And that’s the story of my first period!” – Isabelle
When you and your bestie are on the same cycle
“My parents were away and my uncle was babysitting me, my brother, and my cousins. I went to the toilet oblivious to what was happening. To my surprise I found blood in my pants and freaked out! I knew vaguely of periods but felt very unprepared. I messaged my girlfriends for reassurance, and I discovered that my best friend had also started that night! We couldn’t believe it and both went through the stress together.” – Leah
Bloody family vacation
“I started my first period at 14 years old. I was on holiday in Spain. We were by the pool, and I went for a wee, and then noticed in my swimsuit something weird and brown. I asked my mum about it and she said it was my period. So we sent my dad to the local shop about a 5 minute walk away to get me some pads. My sister is seven years older than me, so luckily my dad knew what he needed to buy. If it hadn’t started on holiday I don’t think it would’ve been so memorable.” – Abigail
Saved by the mud
“It was the 3rd of October of 2011, and I was at a festival with my family wearing WHITE shorts. I happened to sit on a dirty chair and got my white shorts stained by mud. This actually hid the first vestiges of my first period, which I noticed when I got home and went to the toilet.” – Dory

I was at the pool when my boyfriend threw me in the pool. His ring got caught on the string on the tampon and the bloody tampon hit him on the lip he told everyone and now i am the laughing stock of the whole school. WHAT DO I DO HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just got my second period last week. I’m 11. It was two months ago when I got my first period. I was at school, just minding my own business. When I felt something like pee coming out of me. I ignored it. Then more pee-like liquid comes out. I felt my panty liner got soaked. I went to the bathroom at recess and saw the blood. I knew about periods but I still freaked out and instantly got a headache and a kind of light-headed feeling. I wiped and continued through the day like nothing happened. I went back home and saw that I leaked. I asked my mom for pads. She said that she thought I would get it sooner or later…
Hi Carmen! It is normal for periods to be irregular so up to a few years after you start menstruating. However, if you are feeling concerned about the delay it is best to contact a healthcare professional. :)

I got mine on February 15. I woke up and there was blood all over the crotch of my undies. Everything would have been fine IF I didn’t have a math competition that day (and I overslept so we were running late). I ended up slapping on one of the pads that I stole from my mom and went with that ONE pad for the entirety of the competition. Now, that would have been fine as well, BUT I HAD PIANO CLASS RIGHT AFTER. So I spent 6-7 miserable hours bleeding onto a single, soggy pad. I couldn’t tell my mom not because it was a taboo, but because my mom and I got into a fight a few days before my period. I kept telling myself that I would tell her next time, but we got into an argument AGAIN. February through April passed like this. Then, my period decided to bail out on me and skipped May. I thought “OK, fine” but it is August and Aunt Flo is still MIA. Should I be extremely concerned?
It was October 23rd 2019 at school no warning I was nine years old (I’m 10)lmao
I got my period on Saturday, April 25th. That day I got up around 2PM to eat because I was fasting and everything was ok. But when I woke up around 5PM I went to another room and was on Instagram. When I went to the toilet to do my usual and when I took off my underwear I saw brownish-red stain that was more red than brown. Before that I did a lot of research and I knew everything myself but I was still more confused than surprised. That day I was supposed to have a pajama party with my best friend and we agreed on who we would We agreed with her. I continued to behave normally and downloaded some menstrual calendars and read a few more articles. I told my friend through laughter because she and I kept talking when we expected it and her mom got it. at 16 so she expects it too. she asked me if I was kidding her. I told her everything through laughter and she gave me a pad. I told my mom later. Did anyone have a similar story

I got mine when I was twelve and a half like my mom. I was looking forward to it, because I felt left out. I had just gotten a concussion from passing out a week before. (Wasn’t from period other health stuff). Now it really sucks, I am now a realized trans non binary person and I feel so dysphoric. On it right now and I’m miserable.
My name is Theodora I got my period when I was 11 (almost 12) on early January. i was gonna go to an after school sport so i went to pee first. i saw this brownish red stuff in my undies and knew right away. because i was preparing for it lmao. i freaked and put some toilet paper in my undies and eventually texted my best friend Courtney and deleting those texts. i went to my sport activity and went along with it for like 2 hours until my dad picked me up alone (no lil sis or big bro in the car phew) i was scared I was gonna leak but thankfully i didnt. i got home and was gonna shower and pretended like i saw it for the first time after I got out of the shower that night but I wasn’t planning on telling my mom at all. i just needed pads. now it’s been 10 years and I feel like a total pro (even tho i don’t use tampons yet lmao) and courtney idk if she has hers yet but she’d be a 22 year old with no period so she prob does
Hey bg! Highfive! It’ll be just fine! :)

I was lucky when I got my first period….
We had just come back from a friends and family weekend vacation to Oklahoma (we live in Texas) for 3 days. On the car ride back, however, I got mine ( I was around 12) and I FREAKED OUT because of the leak in my white shorts. We were almost home, so I changed into one of my mom’s pad’s after. I was lucky that it didn’t happen earlier in front of everyone!
I was getting dressed when I realized that I was bleeding from down there thankfully bleeding was heavy but lasted 2 minutes so I whipped with baby whiles I used to use when I didn’t shower I liked to be clean didn’t tell my mom for 3 days it was January 11 and I was 12
It’s was December 25th 12:54 my family was at my house and I went to the bathroom wiped and there it was but it was very light but it came and was like HI and BYE! But I’m getting mine January 22nd (tomorrow)
I was at a HUGE swim meet in Texas with hundreds of people. I went to go swim and I was stretching you know…getting ready to race. When it was my heat (my turn to race) they started announcing our names before we swam. I was putting my goggles on when I felt something running down my leg. immediately I started freaking out and these girls behind me were staring. After that I got onto the block with my legs covered in blood in front of all those people but yeah…i quit swim btw :/
I got my period TODAY. I have been having discharge since I was 8 but wasn’t expecting to have my period until I was about 14, since that’s when my mom had hers. I was in block 2 math, and I went to the bathroom and saw a whole bunch of brown stuff on my liner. I thought maybe I was just having weird discharge, but I gave a note to my teacher and she said that I was having my period and she gave me a pad. An still questioning whether I’m actually on my period or not LMAO 😅
Got it at 12 years old on December 18. Was at school, went to the bathroom, blood EVERYWHERE. Luckily I had brought a pad because I had been getting discharge for about a year and knew a lot about periods. Put on a pad went back to 5th period science, collapsed on my bed and cried my eyes out when I got home. :)
Hi Sydney!
Thanks so much for sharing your story! How wonderful that your friends were so helpful:)

Got my period 12 years old on Novemeber 1st, after eating candy and doing school at home from being online schooled. I had to go to the bathroom and wiped to find blood and with no accidents, thankfully. I officially got my period. Grabbed some pads and carried on with my day. Wont ever forget when I got it, happy it wasnt a day before on Halloween!
I was at school on Valentine’s Day and all of my friends had gotten theirs and we were actually talking about periods on the bus that morning. At about 10;15 I went to the restroom only to have a panic attack at the look of the blood in my panties. I told my teacher that I had a stomach a h and went to the nurse who gave me a pad. All of my friends helped me out that week and gave me tons of advice
@saoirse That seems to be a common theme here!!
I thought I went number 2 in my underwear at school!
