Worrying about dealing with your period at a music festival? You’re not alone. If you have been looking forward to a Summer of camping, dancing and belting out the songs of your favorite band, your heart might sink a little if you notice your festival falls at that time of your menstrual cycle.
But you don’t have to panic! Reusable period products are not only great for the planet - but they are also great for festivals. No need to fill up your rucksack with boxes of pads or wait in long lines to change your tampon in a (hot, smelly) portaloo every couple of hours - your reusables have got you covered so you can enjoy this Summer of Love to the max, even when menstruating.
Menstrual Cups Were Born For Festival Life
When we created our Menstrual Cups back in 2005, festivals weren’t necessarily on our minds. But over the years we’ve realized just how perfect they are for weekends where you want to party more and worry less when on your period.
Firstly, when carrying tents, flower headdresses (and maybe a box or two of wine) - you definitely want to keep all other packing to a minimum. With our Cup, you only need to worry about packing one small thing that will last you the entire weekend.
Secondly - and maybe most importantly - your menstrual cup can help you avoid unnecessary trips to the toilet. Portaloos are a necessary evil at music festivals, but let’s face it, we all want to spend as little time in there (or in the queue for them) as possible.
For most people Lunette Menstrual Cups can be left in for a whole 12 hours - so once you insert it in the morning you don’t have to worry about it until you’re ready to head to bed! Whilst everyone’s flow is different, your cup will definitely last longer than the average tampon or pad (and will be way comfier too.) If you’re having so much fun that you forget to take your cup out after 12 hours, don’t panic - just change it as soon as you can.
If you’re worried about inserting your cup in the cramped confines of a portaloo, it might be a good idea to start using your cup a little while before your festival so you can get used to it. This will also give you a chance to understand how regularly you need to change it. For more information on how to use your menstrual cup - check out our handy guide.
Cleaning Your Menstrual Cup On The Go
So it’s clear that menstrual cups are an awesome idea for festival season - but you might be worried about how to keep them safe and clean. Let’s face it, we all know showers are few and far between once you dedicate yourself to a weekend of camping and raving - so how and when can you clean your cup?
First of all, make sure to wash or disinfect your hands. If you do have access to water (even just a little bit from your bottle) you can use our Cup Cleanser which will have it so fresh and so clean in no time. However, our Cup Wipes might be an even better option as they can be used with no water at all!
First, blot and dry the cup with a tissue, then wipe it clean with the Lunette Cup Wipe. Leave it a minute or two to dry completely and then you’re ready to insert it again. Our wipes are biodegradable and can be composted, so you don’t need to worry about your environmental impact when disposing of them.
Don’t be tempted to give yourself a festival wash with your Cup Wipes - the ingredients aren’t made to go directly onto sensitive skin. However, our Intimate Wipes are perfect for keeping you clean and fresh when showers aren’t on the agenda. They’re great for cleaning period blood but can also be used all over your body - so no shower, no problem!
Whether you’re heading to Coachella or Glastonbury, Fuji Rock or Benicassim we hope this gives you the confidence that your period won’t have to stop your partying at a festival this Summer!
